This past week the girls competed in the Gothia Cup 2001 in Sweden touted in European newspapers as the “Youth World Cup” ( www.gothiacup.se ) and placed 1st in this very prestigious tournament. This was the 26th year of this tournament and it set a record with 1,252 participating teams from over 62 nations – four of which were from Canada. Of the 1,252 teams competing, only 14 teams left Sweden with the winner’s trophies.
The final game against Esbo BK from Finland was played at the magnificent 60,000 seat Ullevi Stadium. The Tulis Canada team won 4-0 and Andrea McLachlan from Maple Ridge and Maria-Ashley Karaliolios from Burnaby were both selected to the girls all-star team. Players from the girl’s all-star team included 1 from Spain, 5 from Sweden, 3 from USA, and 2 from Canada (both from the Roman Tulis team and both from the youngest age group).
The week before found the girls in Freferikshavn, Denmark competing in the International “Dana Cup” (www.danacup.com) tournament in which they also secured the first place cup. Andrea McLachlan was nominated player of the match.
Three other Canadian teams participated in the Gothia Cup. A U-14 Boys team from Victoria, who were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs and two, U-20 Girls teams; the South Nepean, Iron Eagles from Ottawa who won three and tied one game in regular play and won two games in the final but were eliminated in their third game and Hollandia Int from Ontario who were eliminated in regular play.
